DOG PEE NEUTRALIZER

CATS HAVE LITTER BOXES for inside use. DOGS DON’T.

Why not? Especially for small dogs with small bladders who live in high rise apartment buildings with seniors.

Carpet pee accidents happen. After many a trial and error I discovered what works for Lilly Belle.

Equal parts of white vinegar and 3% peroxide eliminate odor and mold growth.


DIRECTIONS: Fill large spray bottle with one half white vinegar and one half 3% peroxide. Use a nozzle that has a wide spray. Streams are not recommended as they will soak the carpet and not apply evenly.


Cover pee spot with thick square (washcloth-size) nano towel. Step on towel to absorb as much moisture as possible. If it’s a deep volume pee, then take another dry nano towel and do the same.

Transfer towels to sink to wash with detergent, rinse and squeeze tightly. Hang to dry near a window or air vent to keep ready for next use. I have several on hand, so there’s always a dry one, especially for winter months.


Spray pee spot, using wide spay, about 6 inches from carpet, covering entire pee surface, without soaking it. Let dry, then cover with blue pads in area where your dog most often has pee accidents. I use advocate brand and purchase them online from amazon.com.


The vinegar imparts a slight odor that doesn’t overwhelm, which disappears when dried. This temporary slight odor is far better than a urine smell or a musty odor. In fact, when using these two solutions together, I never have either the urine or the musty odor.


Regarding carpets: Mine is a cheap gray apartment carpet and I’ve never seen a color change. That doesn’t mean I’ll vouch for everybody else’s carpet. I have no idea how the vinegar and peroxide combination will effect any other quality or color carpet.


I share this because it works. I think somebody should design a litter box equivalent for dogs. Maybe without the gravel. It’s possible.

Maple Syrup Shots

All you need is:

1 – a shot glass (sparkling clean)

2- a sugared rim

3- a shot of Grade A maple syrup, room temperature or chilled


I’ll have a “123”. That’s code for maple syrup absent the alcohol.

You mean…

Yes, maple syrup. Now that’s an ice-breaker that gets everybody talking.

Lots of people go to bars and taverns who don’t drink or who quit. Why not make them happy? Too much sugar in a shot? Not for me it isn’t. Let’s get the diabetics in on this developing debate.

But why? Why do we have to produce everything so that a diabetic can consume it? They drink alcohol; this is for those who don’t. And for those who do, who want something sweet without the alcohol for the purpose of prolonging their alcohol high.

Or let’s just get high on maple syrup. It must be real. One hundred percent from the tree sap.

Liquor companies attempt to make maple flavored spirits, but it never works. Put the maple syrup in the drink – on rocks or straight up, however you like. Not at the factory/distiller level, at the bar/restaurant/tavern level.

Add some non-dairy nog or creamer and you’re making the White Russian people envious. No bourbon. Use whiskey or rum. No vodka.

I can see only one problem. You probably couldn’t keep it in stock. Employees would steal it and sell it on the street at half the price. Boosting Grade A maple syrup! It’s in.

Others will take a hit every time they open the bottle for a customer. One for them, one for you. People won’t get suspicious, because you the ‘tender won’t be acting drunk.

No kidding, try it, then wonder why nobody sells it, except in a bottle at a grocery or specialty store.

The demand might be higher than the producers could provide. Something to think about.

I can see ‘tenders trying to dilute it with Aunt Jemima-style syrup. This could be big. If I can already see the corruption possibilities I know you can to, which means it has lucrative potential.

I’m in.

I’d also try mixing a little pink Himalayan salt in with the sugar for the rim. Not much.

Oh, and 2 exact drops of liquid smoke in the syrup.

M-m-m. I want one now, just writing about it. And looking at it makes me thirsty for maple syrup. Alright, hungry for maple syrup. I’m hungry for liquid.

NO. You can’t have any pancakes!! Pretzels maybe.






 

Smoky Candied Cider Walnuts

SMOKY CANDIED CIDER WALNUTS

Everyone will be impressed by these delectable smoky sweet nut meats!  Perfect topper or snack. You’ll want to triple or quadruple this recipe!

Makes 1 cup


1/3 c. apple cider

1/3 c. dark brown sugar

1/4 t. pink Himalaya salt

sev. twists fresh black pepper grind

light sprinkling powdered ginger


a few drops liquid smoke

1 c. walnut halves


1 lg. scoop granulated sugar


In medium skillet, over med.-low heat combine cider, brown sugar, pink salt, black pepper and ginger. Stir well and reduce by about 1/3rd.

Add liquid smoke and walnuts. Stir well to coat evenly, then let the liquid cook down, while stirring often.

When liquid evaporates and walnuts are still moving about loosely in a minimal amount of syrup, remove pan immediately from heat.

When walnuts are at room temperature and skillet is at most lukewarm, add  a large scoop of granulated sugar…

One of Steve’s favorite sauces was a bolognese sauce, essentially meat sauce with tomatoes, garlic and a bunch of other stuff. Both our mothers made it, but didn’t call it that. Spaghetti sauce they called it. All spaghetti sauce back then had meat in it. Times change, but sometimes we still like to go back to our childhood favorites, while now absent the cruelty. Red rice is our go to meat for tomato sauces now. Give it a try. See for yourself!

AFC 5 SPICE ©

AFC 5 SPICE 1

AFC 5 SPICE © – HOW TO MAKE

All you need is an electric coffee bean grinder and 5 spices. 5 Spice is somewhat like curry. Everybody who uses it has their own combination and amounts of spices they prefer. This is mine! Hope you like it!

Makes a little more than 1/4 c.


the equivalent of 5 whole dried stars of anise

3 rounded t. whole cloves

2 inch long cinnamon stick, broken into small pieces

2 t. previously finely ground fennel seed

1 t. previously ground black pepper


Place stars of anise, cloves and cinnamon bits into well of clean coffee bean grinder. Process till crumbly, then till as fine as you can get it, turning unit off every 15 seconds or so to make sure it doesn’t overheat.

Stir up from bottom, then add ground fennel and ground black pepper and reprocess again till as smooth as it can get.

Transfer to covered spice jar and store at room temperature.


Many years ago I bought some Chinese Five Spice at an Asian Oriental market. I used it, didn’t like it and never used it again. Till now.

Steve suggested I make my own. I did. Now I like it – my way of course. I’m not sure what spices were in the original spice I bought so long ago, but the star anise was overpowering and the fragrance and flavor actually made me a little nauseated. I like licorice and fennel so didn’t know what they put in it that was offensive. Anyway, it doesn’t matter. I found my own combination that works for me.

Traditionally Chinese Five Spice was used in animal meat dishes, probably to disguise the flavor of the bad meat. It’s not that amenable to veggie dishes. I did however make a tomato bean soup using my version of the spice and I liked it.

Use sparingly till you know how it flavors a dish. Too much and the dish gets ruined. Rubbing it on meat and then grilling it doesn’t make much difference because a lot of it gets burned off. Since we don’t cook with animals, we use the spice combination more judiciously with no one spice overpowering any of the others.
